Laskar Pelangi / The Rainbow Troops

Laskar Pelangi (The Rainbow Troops), is a film adaptation of Andrea Hirata's literary work that first appeared on shelves in 2004, based on his childhood memories.

Set in the Sumatran island of Belitong, the film opens with the adult returning to his birthplace after a number of years away. From there it flashes back his first day at school, with two teachers -- Muslimah and Harfan -- who have been eagerly waiting for students to enroll at their decrepit Islamic primary school. Since the district school board had already declared that their little school must close if it didn't meet the ten-student minimum, this particular day is obviously a nervous affair for both teachers.

Fortunately, ten students (mostly children of poor laborers) do sign up, forming a little enclave of first-graders christened with a titular moniker by Muslimah. Besides Ikal, the eclectic group comprises an assortment of characters (named by Muslimah as the rainbow troops) -- mainly Lintang, a fisherman's son who turns out to be a genius and Mahar, a musically obsessed dreamer who is never without a radio by his side.

Five years pass, and the majority of the film takes place in the student's fateful fifth grade, chronicling the ups and downs of the Rainbow Troops through the eyes of young Ikal.

The film sensitively captures the struggles of marginalized citizens to achieve their dreams, the beauty of friendship and its ability to save humanity, against the background of what was once one of Indonesia’s richest island.

3 Hari Untuk Selamanya / 3 Days To Forever

One car, Two Cousins, Three days to get to forever

Yusuf, an uptight 21 year-old, is convinced by his 19 year-old cousin, Ambar, to escape a family gathering and go clubbing with her. Drunk and wasted, they wake up the next morning to find that they have missed their flight to attend a family wedding in another town.

The two cousins decide to drive there in a family car, not knowing that the supposedly one day journey takes them 3 days instead. Along the way they get high and get lost, encounter interesting and bizarre characters, run into an argument about religion, marriage and sex, while trying to defeat the arising sexual tension between them.

With ‘Three Days To Forever’, Writer-Director Riri Riza (‘Eliana Eliana’,’Gie’) delves into these weighty issues with the lighter touch and carefree attitude of a road movie, yet creates an intimate film that will reflect the feelings of inebriation and alienation of the two young protagonists as they feel their way through societal conventions.

GARASI

Love, Anger and Rock ‘n Roll

Gaia, Aga and Awan only have one goal in their lives: to play music. They formed a band, produced their own mini-album and distributed it with the support of a local music store. Soon, the album made them local heroes.

But outside the band, thay each have their secrets which they keep from one another. Apart from the maturity of their music, they are still young and restless, and are still looking for their true identity.

When Garasi gained their popularity, their friendship is put to a test. The hidden love; the miscommunication; their conflict with their families; and judgements from the media and society forced them to realize who they are and how much they love their music.

Rumah Ketujuh / The Seventh House

Cakra and Lintang are two young people who have been best friends since childhood, and still single. They are movie freaks who work in the same video store, and have the same ambition that is to to build an art house movie theater.

What makes them different is their pursuit for Mr./ Miss Right, and the methods that fashioned each of their quests. For Cakra, the guiding vision is the ideal feminine figure, seen only from the backside, which has been frequently haunting his dreams. Books on dreams interpretations are Cakra’s bible in seeking the mysterious beauty. While Lintang, her head totally enmeshed in astrological guidelines, clings to the conviction that her soul mate has to be a “Taurus in the Seventh House.” She is more desperate than Cakra, for she is constantly reminded by a kindly old advice that warns her, if she did not get her other half by her 24th birthday, she is cursed to be a spinster for eternity! Pretty soon, Lintang is dating a tall, handsome guy, while Cakra starts to go out with a cutesy girl several years his junior.
